I added this book because I watched the first season of the Netflix show and enjoyed it, but it just wasn't as good as the show. The characters are more likable in the show, and they took out some of the weird messages in this book. Lots of reviews mention the consent issues, but it is also strangely pro-colonization at one point. The world building seems interesting, but we don't ever really get into it and Geralt's backstory comes as one boring, mansplain-y info dump. The short story format was a little easier to follow than the show, but I'm still a little unclear on why some of them mattered. I'm vaguely curious if the later books go deeper into the world building, but I probably won't borrow them because I am not really interested in this version of the characters or having a good time with all the sexism.

Re-read via audio-book so I can continue the series.

I have never played the Witcher, and didn't get more than one or two episodes into the TV series, however I have finished game of thrones and wanted a fantasy series so I wanted to give it a shot. The first two books are short story collections, and the subsequent five books are normal novels. This was a short story collection. My main two gripes are that I found the writing style a little hard to follow at times, and also many of the characters are kind of written as archetypes. That being said I did really enjoy this overall, even though I have gripes I found the world and different stories a little bit addictive. I think the character of Geralt is enough of a through line between all the the different stories that it still feels coherant. I also enjoyed the fairy-tale aspect of many of the different stories. It also was nice to get straight into the action rather than having a slow exposition & getting started section which is very common in the fantasy genre.

The blatant male-gazey treatment of the female characters aside, the fantasy was decent. Not very unique, but good nonetheless, with interesting worldbuilding and very endearing bromance between Geralt and Jaskier/Dandelion.

The writting was easy on the eyes and full of action and honestly, what else do you need?
But Andrzej Sapkowski should probably frequent some courses on womens writting and take notes, because everytime a character of "the weaker sex" was introduced i broke into a cold sweat.
