the beginning chapters with all might appearing on the scene are fantastic, and pacing wise it slows down at the beginning of the sports fest (fair, est. new arc and all). this volume really highlighted how much i like the art style- lots of extra big panels and high contrast work

In this volume, we're finishing up with villains who broke into the USJ by displaying All Mights heroics and a save from a few other teachers. Then it’s time for the UA Sports Festival, which is as popular as the Olympics were before everyone developed quirks. Event one is an obstacle course around the arena, complete with killer robots, tightrope walking, and a mine field. All Might talks to Deku beforehand about using the sports festival to announce to the world that he was a serious hero, and what better way to do that than winning the obstacle course! Of course, this paints a huge target on his back for the second event, coming in the next volume.

A sports festival is a fun way to introduce some more minor characters, mainly the ones from other classes who are vying for top spots in Class A. We also get a lot more of Todoroki, which I’m very excited about. Kacchan ticks off everyone like usual, but his tough guy exterior and hatred for Deku is getting old. There is also a lot of build up in the competitiveness and relationship between Deku and Todoroki, which I'm glad for because Todoroki is much more interesting than Kacchan.

The age rating for this volume says Teen, but then it says "Recommended for ages 16 and up.", which would mean it should be Teen Plus. VIZ.com rates this volume for Teen, so I'm going to assume there is a typo. Either way, there is nothing inappropriate in this volume that would make it more suitable to older teens.

One of the things I like about this is unlike so much shonen manga where you have a young boy training to fight and he's an obnoxious, screaming arrogant brat, Midoriya is doing the training to fight thing but he is sweet and kind and cares more for others than he does for himself. I would want to know Deku. All Might chose him for his good heart.

This volume has two arcs. It finishes the arc where the army of villains attack the kids' training grounds and again we get to see Midoriya's strength of character. In spite of the villains gravely injurying at least two pro hero teachers, and in spite of being unable to control One-For-All, Deku races in to help All Might because he knows All Might's secret.

Once this resolves (with some good introspection on what the villains are and their motives which I don't remember from the anime), we get the Sports Festival, basically the new Olympics where the kids compete so the pro heroes can see them and pick them for internships. Since I'm ahead of the manga in watching the anime, I know what's coming up next volume and it was a lot of fun so I'm looking forward to it.
