Super-fun sci-fi story. Great action sequences. Are our bodies our destiny or can we transcend? Fang the dog is awesome. Alita is amazing. A very cool book.

Plowed through this in 1 night after getting it at a SakuraCon trade in. I now know why it is such a classic! Can't wait to get the rest of them.

I understand why people love this but it’s not for me.

So after having these on my shelves for so long and after seeing the movie I just had to read the manga. And quite enjoyed it! The art style has never been a favorite when it comes to characters but it was well done and quite detailed. Each character and scene was distinct. One thing I really appreciated were the battle sequences were easy to follow.
I liked Daisuke a lot in this. Very science-geekish so his side profession is almost comical. Alita is so petite! Almost child-like! Her personality feels a lot deeper than I expected.
The ending was very abrupt though. Eager for Vol 2.

Read about movie so checked the volume. Didn't really see anything special in the comic but it wasn't bad. World where a fancy city floats above the junkyard where poor people struggle to survive alongside robots and cyborgs.
Ido finds a robot head and rebuilds it. Alita doesn't remember much but knows martial arts so Ido changes her body to support it. Mayhem ensues.
Story's a 3 but artwork is a 4.

I give this book two stars for the artwork and fight scenes.
Great detail went into drawing this manga. The fight scenes were pretty good. However, the characters and story lacked depth.
I had seen the 2019 film directed by Robert Rodriguez first and absolutely loved it, and I cared about the characters. The movie had an intriguing story and genuine motivation for the characters. In this book, motivation for the characters was insufficient or gave me no reason to care about the character at all.
I do not expect one manga to include much depth as far as the story goes, but at least enough to make me interested in reading more. This book did not offer that.

The first volume of the Gunnm series is a quirky and intense introduction to the futuristic dystopia in which the amnesiac cyborg "Alita" finds herself. While the art style may be a hit or miss for some readers, the fast-paced story, for me, made up for it, though it does feel over-the-top at points.

Couldn't stomach past a certain point. I've heard good things, but I just couldn't stomach it.

Ok, I just realized I didn't have this series in Goodreads. I think I read them somewhere around 2000 and I *believe* I borrowed them from someone? It's possible it was a pen pal of mine, but I'm really not sure. I AM pretty sure it was the earlier VIZ edition, that flipped the artwork. This series is a little gory for me at times, but I did like it well enough to finish, and when the movie came out a few years ago I was happy to watch that.
