A rich account of complicated, subtle shifts in antebellum American sociality. Castiglia uses psychoanalytic frameworks to talk about how democracy has shifted from public debate and discourse to interior self management and restraint. The chapters focus on antebellum texts, mostly fiction, and that could get a bit overwhelming at times (antebellum texts are not my area of expertise), but overall a really exciting approach to these works. Also Chris Castiglia seems really warm-hearted and the epilogue about ACT UP! was great.
