Thesea are alternate stories. The better tales are the alternate Empire and Jedi stories. Quite a nice collection.

Meh. Saw this mentioned in a list of best things in the Star Wars EU--which sets the bar incredibly low, since I don't like what I've read of the EU--and figured I would give it a try. The first story was all right, but it was downhill from there with a horrifying cameo by Jake Lloyd in the second and really bad art in the third, which seemed the most implausible of them. 2.5 stars rounded down.

Basically, Star Wars 'what-if's'.

What if Lukes attack run on the original Death Star had failed?
What if Luke had frozen to death on Hoth?
What if the attempt to free the frozen-in-Carbonitite Han from Jabba the Hutt had failed?

And, most intriguingly, what had George Lucas's original vision looked like?

As in any compilation, some of these stories are better than others - it's also quite easy to spot the similarities between Lucas's original vision and the Prequel trilogy (most noticeably in how Leia is portrayed)!

I'm rating this omnibus iteration, although actually I read the individual publications. But they are all so short that counting them individually toward my Goodreads yearly totals seems like totally cheating, so here we are.

Overall, I liked the alternate twists on the story. I liked that each volume had different artists with a different style, and I liked that they were each a re-telling from a different point - a 'what if things got to -here-, and then -this- happened?' Originally I thought they were going to tell a cohesive three-part story, but instead they were three individual stories.

That said, none of the twists were particularly exceptional and mostly the track of the stories covered the same sort of ground - there were some obvious attempts to spin different story arcs out of the world, but a lot of the 'high points' were included anyway. My favorite was probably the second, in which
SpoilerLuke dies on Hoth and the story continues without him, ultimately leading to Leia becoming a Jedi.
This was a fun read, and a very quick read, but ultimately it felt a bit shallow to me.

Pretty amazing alternate history Star Wars Tales. Although I thought there would only be one twist that would create a full story arch through each of the orignal trilogy movies, instead each chapter focused on a unique change for the particular movie it focused on. While I didn't always enjoy the ending, the ride was sure fun. Cool awesome fanfic. Leia as a jedi was a particular fave, along with Yoda making his presence a bit (A LOT) more epic. Fun times.

adventurous

The idea behind this is fun and could be awesome, but most of the time it just ended up following something similar to what happened in the movies. I'd say that the New Hope storyline tries to be the most creative with the idea. I don't know what that was at the end of the Empire set. Blind Han Solo was pretty dumb in ROTJ, too. Overall, the journey is more fun than the actual results here.
