The combination of a character returning home and a doppelganger mystery works very well. There were some panty shots and a few other unnecessary male gaze-y panels.

This must be the summer of weird books, because this one just goes right off the deep end from the first chapter. The basic plot is that a college student, Shinpei Ajiro, returns to his rural island hometown during the summer after a close friend of his passes away. There are doppelgangers of people in town appearing and killing off their originals in order to take their place, and Shinpei is able to restart his time on the island whenever he is killed. This lead to him trying to make it through the same timeframe on the island in order to keep people from passing away. Throughout this volume he fails multiple times in his battle against the shadows. In order to keep my ideas straight for this, I'm going to review what is known so far.

Shinpei is able to relive the same day over and over again. After the first one his eye ends up changing color. This is the eye of Mother, the seeming leader of the shadows. Shinpei's favorite author is also on the island and seems to be aware of the mystery going on. She had written a book that seems to follow the same plot as the story we are following, could this be coincidence?

The major goal of the shadows is to bring about the return of mother by killing off everyone on the island and covering it in darkness. When they make a copy of someone they flash as though taking a picture. They also leave behind a shadow residue. Ushioh, the possible shadow of Ushio, doesn't remember anything besides her feelings for Shinpei and is unconvinced that she is a shadow. Shadows only get the memory information up to the point in time when the person they copy is. So if they don't kill their copied person, then it's possible they can be discerned by testing knowledge of things past the point of copy. Pass phrases might not work though because if they copy someone after the phrase is made, they will know it.

Mio's shadow already exists at the starting point of the story, along with Shiori Kobayakawa's. The sheriff is the seeming next target for the starting point as well. I do wonder about what the Kobayakawa doppelganger family gets up to after they go disappearing the day after the wedding. At the moment things are still pretty unclear but I look forward to seeing where the story goes and trying to get to the bottom of the mystery.

this one wasn't for me. i'm generally not a fan of ground hog day-esque time loop stories. the addition weird underage fan service and the lack of character development, certainly did not help to improve my reading experience. nothing of notable interest to see here.

August 2023. Mystery manga mentioned to me, sort of a Twin Peaks meets Invasion of the Body Snatchers meets Groundhog Day situation? A teen comes home for his adoptive sister/best friend’s funeral and there’s rumors she was strangled and didn’t die from drowning naturally. Then some body snatching happens and he relives his visit when he gets murdered by the baddies.

This is an interesting concept, it ends up a bit messy at times but I did enjoy it overall. Our main character lacks a bit of personality for me, but my biggest issue was the pervy moments.
The best friend/adoptive sister’s younger sister is 15, 3-4 years younger than the main character who has been away at college. And there are multiple upskirt panty shots, walking in on her in the shower naked (the most scandalous bits censored), as well as him falling face first into an adult woman’s cleavage.
It’s a mature manga, presumably there will be more moments of sexual contact or nudity in future volumes, which, fine. but you keep exposing a character you wrote as a 15 year old, to be read by adults, who is repeatedly being seen naked or in her underwear against her will. It’s creepy and unnecessary.

“Summertime Rendering” vol 1 by Yasuki Tanaka.

3.5 or 4.

That was so unhinged.

I really like the concept so far, though I think the weird fanservice is really unnecessary. I love how realistic Shinpei is for me, so I'm excited to see what happens next.

I finally finished the anime a few months ago so when I saw this I figured I'd check it out. It's as violent and creepy as the anime, and I really like the art style. I definitely think I'll try to get the rest of the series over time.

The premise is this: Ajiro Shinpei's childhood friend (and is also his love interest), Kofune Ushio, is dead so he returns to an island he calls home, Hitogashima, to attend her funeral. But actually, there is a LOT more going on behind her death.

"Summertime Rendering" is like a perfect blend of Sakurazaka Hiroshi's "All You Need is Kill"―or, you know, Tom Cruise's "Edge of Tomorrow" movie―and Jordan Peele's "Us" movie. The way it takes place on a secluded island also gives an isolated, claustrophobic feel. For me, it's 10 out of 10.

Oh, and if you're scrolling to see these white people complain about two things: nudity or 'sexualizing' teenagers AND 'incest implications', let me as an Asian person get things straight:

ONE: Summertime Rendering is published in a media targeted at YOUNG BOYS. Even the protagonist is in his TEENS. What's so abnormal about teenagers seeing things from teenagers' perspective??? I swear to god, you Gregs and Karens can't understand context anymore. "But the author is an adult", you say??? YES DUH OF COURSE BECAUSE MOST TEENAGERS ARE AT SCHOOL TRYING TO FINISH THEIR EDUCATION.

TWO: There are no 'incest-implications-with-the stepsibling' in this story. Shinpei is just living together with the girls, no legal paperwork whatsoever. He keeps his family name. He does NOT call the man taking care of him "Dad" or "Father". He is basically, simply, another person living under the same roof (like a freeloader) and growing up together. Just because one says "He's like my brother" or "She's my sister" doesn't immediately lump things into an incestual relationship. (sigh) This is why English is a lost cause in many cultural contexts, and here, people are mad over pretty much nothing.

That being said, Summertime Rendering is easily my best read in 2022-2023. The author does not afraid to leave crumbs behind and foreshadow things, so when a new mystery emerged, the readers already have the answer to the previous mysteries and can use it as a weapon to help them understand things to come. The manga version has special, extra chapters named "Record" and they contain additional detailed information about what's going on in the story.

I'm losing so much sleep since finding this manga series at the end of 2022. I couldn't stop reading until the last chapter (there are 139 of them) because it's very well-written and complex, and the relationship between characters are absolutely adorable. I love how the romance aspect does NOT hinder the progress of the characters, at all. If anything, it's because they care deeply and love each other that they make it so far in such a bleak situation.

Again, for me, it's 10 out of 10.
