Brief Summary: Shehadeh examines his difficult relationship with his father within the context of the Palestinian struggle for freedom. Shehadeh discusses his journey to understanding his father's motives throughout his life and how experiences of his own have made him realize how Shehadeh often misjudged his father.
Thoughts: This was a beautifully written memoir. Shehadeh's vulnerability in discussing his relationship with his father both during his father's lifetime and after his death was beautiful to read. This book highlights not only the difficulties that children and parents can have when they disagree on how to approach important issues, but how children grapple with understanding their parents were once just individuals making their way in the world.
The way that Shehadeh examined his father through his papers and hard-won accomplishments for the Palestinian cause not only highlighted important first-person accounts of colonization but also how the next generation does not always appreciate the approach of the previous generation in the struggle for freedom. For example, when Shehadeh was discussing how to approach various legal cases with his father Shehadeh felt his father did not agree or did not want to go far enough. Both men wanted the same thing, but the differences in their approaches led to friction between the two of them.
I liked this book a great deal and if you are interested in learning more about Palestinian history, culture, and experiences I would recommend this book.
