Oh boy. So I've watched the movie before reading the book and maybe this is because I'm an impatient bitch, but the book was a little bit too slow for me. At first, I really loved the book and thought that no matter what, I would give it five stars. Then in the middle it went down to four, and now I'm at three point five. Don't get me wrong, I love the writing. It's definitely special if you write a script that is meant to be read like a book. I also found Harold to be fascinating, and his mother was the worst, but still iconic, in a bad way of course. Maude, though... she is iconic in a different way. She had her moments, where I found her amazing, like, when she ate watermelon at a funeral, but especially in the last part of the book, I found her kind of annoying. Maybe annoying is the wrong word, but I couldn't resonate with her. Her philosophical wisdom was just so pretentious at times and I found the stunts this 80-year-old woman could pull off, laughable at times. I mean yea, the author didn't mean to depict a realistic grandma, but that's why I love the movie. It's just easier to enjoy, I guess.
