I just wasn't fond of how the entire narrative flowed. I'd be curious to see if it's more interesting as a play.

I really enjoyed this play about unrequited love of unhappy and selfish people, who seems to care little about anything but themselves. This is probably what makes the play sad but utterly beautiful.

Quelle joie d’avoir décidé de relire cette pièce. Je l’avais vue il y a plusieurs années et elle m’avait complètement enlevé le gout de la littérature russe. Mais cette fois je l’ai trouvée géniale. I am so glad I reread this play. I had seen it many years ago on stage and it gave me one more reason to avoid Russian literature. But reading it now, I found it great. The main character, an aspiring author, is depicted with the traits of a Romanticism hero. Through this ideal writer, Chekhov explores the hopeless pursuit of glory and happiness in a comedically tragic way.

Rounding up from 3.5 stars. Great translation, a curiosity of a play (for me); I'm not unfamiliar with plays of this era, but am more comfortable with the offerings from the earlier 20th century and beyond. I'll read it again to catch any subtext I might have missed, but as this was Chekhov's first flirtation with drama, I think he was (to my eye) not exactly subtle with nuance and analogy.
The first Russian play I’ve read, and a good one to start with. I found the characters and plot easy to follow, and the story never dragged. Plenty of excellent dialogue and action between the characters.
