Overview
One of the quickest ways to glean a large amount of weather information for a specific area is by looking at a METAR (Meteorological Terminal Air Report). METARs are issued at the top of every hour at specific sites (generally airports, military bases, or other permanent weather observation stations), but if the weather changes drastically, a special report may be issued (SPECI). Each METAR includes the airport (or station) identifier, time of observation, wind, visibility, runway visual range, present weather phenomena, sky conditions, temperature, dew point, altimeter setting, and extra details in a remarks section. All of this information is sectioned into groups and shortened, or "encoded," in order to pass along a large amount of information in a small area/small screen. Each prompt will contain a different "code" that can be found in a METAR, the "decoded" message, and some ideas on how to fulfill the prompt. I'll also include a little extra explanation/context for concepts that aren't as obvious.
Some general ideas on how to complete each prompt:
Some general ideas on how to complete each prompt:
- Read a book with the encoded letters in the title
- i.e., For prompt "SPECI," read a book with "SPECI" in the title
- Read a book with the decoded message in the title
- i.e., For prompt "FU," read a book with the word "Smoke" in the title
- Use the encoded portion as an acronym, where each letter of the code is the first letter of each word in the title
- i.e., For the prompt "FROPA," read a book with a 5 word title that abbreviates into F.R.O.P.A
Feel free to also completely disregard and come up with your own ideas :D
