Overview
Why have this challenge?
In discussions surrounding banned books, the focus is on school libraries and public libraries. But those aren't the only places where the freedom to read is being threatened. There is overt, codified censorship that targets a vulnerable population: incarcerated adults and children.
Most prisons have broadly worded rules about the materials that are not allowed within prison walls. These rules can be changed at any time, and can be instituted for any reason. Incarcerated individuals have few if any ways to challenge books being added to banned materials lists. The excessive banning of materials is a disservice to incarcerated individuals.
Everyone deserves the freedom to read.
