The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl by Issa Rae

3.0

The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl is Issa Rae's collection of humorous essays that cover her life and misadventures.

Despite the fact I have never seen any of Issa's work, this book caught my eye. I love a good memoir, especially if it's funny. There were plenty of things I enjoyed about this book, especially the stories of her childhood. They were funny and interesting. However, there a few things that rubbed me the wrong way, the one that did so the most was her whole essay on weight. It felt tone deaf and just left me feeling icky.

Overall, it was enjoyable but just missed the mark for me a bit.
