is february the month of just shitty books and huge letdowns because what the fuck was this????
the blurb was enticing; i feel like a broken violin saying this in every review this month but the premise seemed very much up my street; second chance, rivals, just ugh.
instead it was pretty much everything i hate in romance and love put into one book. jared is one of the worst male characters i’ve seen in a fucking minute; he’s an absolute dickhead, by his own confession, and it’s clear he views the fmc as the one guilty chip he could never get off his shoulder. he views the fmc as something to have; he objectifies her and removes her from all of her autonomy. some scenes were VERY uncomfortable to get through bc she is literally saying , let me go fucking home, and he is like . no u will stay with me. and of course for the sake of the plot, she “gives in”. this narrative is not only morally fucked, but genuinely incredibly dangerous.
and it’s so annoying bc there was no reason for it. there was no reason for the cheating plot line. the premise of the duo would have been enough. so much could have been done. it’s clear kennedy ryan is a skilled writer, and so much more, especially about having body / weight issues and that impacting the way you view sex and relationships could have been explored. i’m genuinely so frustrated and disgusted.
but no. you have a misogynistic prick force a woman against her will into his presence, harasses her into spending time with him, and she somehow is drawn in by his objectification and lack of autonomy he provides her that she willingly cheats on her man of several fucking years who has done nothing but be fucjing perfect in every single fucking way.
and i get there was a point of her not being happy after finding perfection. and realising what is expected for her isn’t necessarily what is best for her. but she could have discovered this without fucking cheating on someone who hasn’t hurt her, and instead running into the arms of a man who seeks to view her as his property, a chip on his shoulder that he can’t get rid of. a horrible man whose willing to let the world burn, but it’s okay bc “ong i care about you”. i genuinely cannot express just how much i loathe this book, and i’m disgusted at the messages it’s implicitly signalling
i don’t get what this book was about or what it was meant to say. and it sickens me that people actually would support such a couple and such narratives. kennedy ryan is clearly a good writer, but it annoys me that such talents were used to write such filth.
