Last Train to Istanbul by Ayşe Kulin
5.0
The story revolves around two sisters - Sabiha & Selva who are forced to separate when Selva decides to marry Rafael Alfandri, a Jew, against the wishes of her Muslim father, and moves to France. The story is set at the time of war, and the invasion of Nazis in France jeapordizes the two lovers, and many other Jews. I loved how warm and friends almost all Turkish characters in the story are. A bunch of brave Turkish diplomats decide to help the innocents, especially the Jews and take them to safety. This is a story of humanity, where risking everything, Tarik & Ferit lead the Alfandris, and many other innocents through a war-torn continent and enemy territories safely to Istanbul.
I can't believe I took so long to finish this book. Despite being a fictional telling, it really transported me to the time of war. I could feel the fear of not being able to live to see the next day, in the time of war. If you like visiting an era that existed through books - this is a mandatory read.
