The worldbuilding is fascinating here, and that’s only the background for this story. This is a mash-up fantasy tale with disparate elements (wizarding school, climate crisis, disadvantaged populations) that wouldn’t have been out of place in the cyberpunk 90s if you replaced the magic with computer hacking. Wiswell is very good at creating interesting characters; however, I felt this story continued to set up expectations and foil them in ways I didn’t appreciate as a reader, as if I were being tricked. Still, it’s fun and different.
