A Natural History of Dragons by Marie Brennan
5.0
I've been hankering to give this book five stars since about the second or third chapter. I absolutely loved this book.
It wasn't really what I was expecting - I only half-read the description so I was expecting a dragon encyclopaedia. Instead I got the fictional account of the first female dragon naturalist set in a something like the late-Victorian era. The story starts with a very young Lady Trent falling in love with reading and knowledge, something any book reader can immediately understand. The lead character is passionate and a bit of an oddball, more interested in finding a good library than a good husband.
The story can move a bit slowly at times, and there are a fewer dragons than the story would imply. Regardless I really enjoyed this book and maintain my early impression that this book deserved five stars.
