What an immersive read! The world of the Kingdom Isles that D. M. Sonntag has created is so rich and vivid. From the moment he arrived on the page, Mad had my whole heart. Something that always stands out to me with D. M. Sonntag's stories is the way she manages to seamlessly weave important religious and cultural questions into a fast-paced and engaging plot. I read 'The Lightning Bride' before reading 'The Mermaid's Shadow' but I think it would work just as well to read 'The Mermaid's Shadow' first, which I personally see as the sign of an excellent prequel. I loved getting to know more about Emilia and Madeaus, as well as the story behind Raevina and Caius, and the glimpses into the earlier lives of the other characters such as Ferryn. Highly recommended for lovers of action adventures and worldbuilding that is second to none!
