Les Liaisons dangereuses by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos
I found this story much more interesting after I read about de Laclos in Claude Manceron's prehistory of the Revolution. It's not a feel good tale, but it's amazing on so many other levels, including a mercilessly accurate picture of the "ton" of court, which was not really "bon"
