Untether by Elodie Hart
3.0
3.5 ⭐ Untether is a steamy reverse-age-gap romance that follows Aida, a celebrity in her 40s looking to reclaim her sexuality, and Cal, one of the four owners of Alchemy sex club. Cal is a familiar face from the previous books; a jovial, handsome man who has fun with lots of women and never settles down. Aida wants to use her platform to create a docuseries that highlights how women of her age are still sexual beings, and that they should own their desires. Aida and Cal are brought together by a partnership between the documentary and Alchemy.
I enjoyed Untether overall, but it didn't live up the the first three books for me. I LOVED the first three books. I admire Aida so much as a character and I love her journey of connecting with herself and her own desires. I think it is true that our society doesn't value women as sexual beings after they reach a certain age...and I love that Aida was willing to risk her career to shine light on a controversial topic. To be honest, I did find myself cringing at times over the interviews and how awkward it felt for them to be speaking about sex on national television. I was thinking about how the public would perceive it and knew there would be criticism.
I love how obsessed Cal is with Aida. From the moment they met (and even before), Cal is incredibly interested in her and shows it. While their first encounters in the Unfurl program feel "awkward" and a bit forced, mainly from Aida's side, she quickly becomes more comfortable with Cal and the awkwardness melts away. Aida and Cal have incredible chemistry together and the spicy scenes are well written and sexy; Elodie Hart is very good at what she does. Watching Cal fall in love with Aida (first, I will add) is adorable. It takes a bit longer for Aida to trust Cal. While I can't yet relate to all of her struggles, her difficulty with trust is definitely one that I understand. The growth that both characters go through is rewarding to read about. Elodie Hart writes these incredibly spicy books that also offer a lot of emotional depth.
I love age gap romance, but I prefer when the man is older. I don't know what that says about me, but it's just what I like. The first 3 books in the series are all age-gap and that is partly what drew me to them. The reverse age-gap is just not my preference and I think it did impact my enjoyment of the story just a little bit. I did pick this up knowing this, so I tried to not let it impact my review. There is also a very cheesy line referencing Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift that I just could not take seriously, and I love Taylor Swift! Some people will probably like it, but it was a cringey one for me lol.
Very steamy and cute romance. I love this series and I can't wait to read more!
