I think it shows that I am used to reading long detailed novels when I found Fitzgerald’s seminal work to be lacking.
For a short story it covered a lot of ground and I was pleased to find a classic whose prose wasn’t so far removed from today’s vernacular that I could actually follow along. However, the lack of depth for me made it confusing in places ( I didn’t realise Gatsby was dead until it was written outright ) and the romance this supposedly featured (the blurb called it a great romance of the age) was so fleeting you could miss it.
