The Grownup by Gillian Flynn

2.0

I had high expectations going into this short story. I adore all of her other books and would go as far as to say she’s one of my top five authors.

However, this book was a complete letdown. Gillian Flynn excels at writing characters. She’s not afraid of writing them with flaws and claws and wickedness. In fact, that is what usually endears me to her protagonists. But I never felt like I could pin down what I thought of the main character. I also like her novels because they’re deeper looks into messed-up relationships and that just doesn’t happen.

The whole time you wonder if there is anything paranormal going on and by the time the twists happened I just didn’t care. I closed the book and had to sit with it for a second to really understand what I just read. Is it a ghost story? I don’t know. Is it a psychological thriller? Probably but the format doesn’t allow time for it to be thrilling.
