The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah
5.0
5/5 stars. Physical book. I was suggested this book for someone who might have enjoyed Where the Crawdads Sing. The story is so incredible! Leni is 13 years old and her mom and dad move to Alaska in hopes of a simpler, self-sufficient life. Her dad, Ernt, was in the Vietnam War, was a POW, and abuses her mom, Cora, on a regular basis. Kristin Hannah writes about their life in Alaska with such zeal and honesty. It was not easy for them to become “Alaska strong”. They have a great community of people who want to help them, but Ernt rarely accepts, as he wants to be self-sufficient. The cold and darkness does not help his fragile mental state and Leni and Cora pay for it. I do not want to spoil anything more, but I would highly recommend this book. Kristin Hannah is a great storyteller and I look forward to reading more of her books.
The Great Alone really highlights the resilience and love that is shared between a mother and a daughter; this was so touching to me as I have a daughter. I loved the story, the characters, and the descriptive Alaska that Hannah shares with her readers. Bravo!
