10 Things That Never Happened by Alexis Hall

Even though I knew this story would be completely seperate from the Boyfriend / Husband Material universe, I was hoping it would have a similar vibe. But sadly I really couldn't get into this one for several reasons. The following review might come off overly bitchy, but I'm in that mood at the moment. Probably my own fault for having too high expectations for this one.

Fake amnesia stories are hard to pull of in general, and this one didn't work for me. The plot felt contrived, it puttered along and then fizzled out in the end. I didn't really feel the attraction / connection between Sam and Jonathan. I don't like it when part of the backstory of one character is alluded to over and over again and it's only revealed at the big showdown in the end. Neither am I a fan of having the story narrated in a overly colloquial kind of way. Yes, it's first person, but how many "like" can you read without it driving you bonkers.

Including made-up-elaborate names for shower / bathtub / toilet models in the narrative can be fun for a bit, but throughout the whole story I just found it tedious. Jonathan's family was a good comic relief most of the time, even though again I thought the son/father conflict felt contrived and it wasn't really resolved as much as just brushed over in the end.
