An archaeologist, a Cursebreaker, and an old Scottish castle, what’s there to do? Hmmm, well in Riley and Clark’s case those two different individuals found themselves working together albeit under different circumstances. Riley came from a long line of cursebreakers and with having a knack of breaking curses, it was the thing that gave Riley purpose, and she enjoyed it very much. Clark on the other hand, had always had a deep appreciation for unearthing unique artifacts from a young age, and it led to him becoming an archaeologist. When both Clark and Riley arrived at the ancient, old castle in the Scottish highlands, the two had very different ideas on how to approach the curse that lingered. Clark was very much in the camp of not believing in the paranormal whereas Riley believed in it. With mysterious things occuring in the castle, Riley and Clark found themselves working together despite their dislike of one another. This story had enemies with benefits, paranormal-ish romantic comedy, and reminiscent of the 1999 movie, “The Mummy”.

If you’ve ever watched the 1999 movie, “The Mummy” this was reminiscent of that but replace the setting with the Scottish highlands. I had been wanting to read this story for quite some time now, and with the variety of tropes mentioned, I was even more excited! Right away when I started reading this book, I liked the way the story was set up. Each Riley and Clark had their own way of thinking which made for some…heated debates. In addition, the setting took me far away to the castle in which Riley and Clark were trying to uncover its secrets and curse. The story had an eerie feel to it with the way there were kind of spooky things that occurred. While I initially had my doubts like Clark, the way Riley went about things was fascinating, and had me thinking, “maybe it’s just a gift”. Riley certainly had a way with breaking curses, and I was more than happy to follow along Riley’s way!
Riley and Clark may not have gotten along, but oh boy the tension between them was palpable. Before the enemies with benefits, Riley and Clark were in between enemies and the occasional attempting to be nice. Riley and Clark would always go at it with saying things that got on each other’s nerves while also heating things up. I liked the enemies to lovers trope in this book, and even the spice worked well in that, “I hate you, but…” trope.
At the start of this book, I had high hopes for Riley and Clark’s story, but towards the end I had mixed feelings. As much as I enjoyed the mystery of Arden Castle and how Riley and Clark went about discovering the truth behind it, there was something missing in it for me. As a whole, I think this was a good book, but personally I didn’t feel a certain spark if that makes sense. Would I recommend this book? Yes, of course. I just personally didn’t end up feeling a great sense of obsession over Riley and Clark. That being said, I did LIKE the enemies to lovers in this story! Riley and Clark gradually became more open with one another and it translated well into their romance. The unexplained things that occurred in the castle had me wondering if the curse was real, and in the end, I was inclined to believe that Riley and Clark hit the mark on ending the curse. The romance was good, spice was great as well, even as Clark who seemed buttoned up as always was a bit more outspoken with Riley in the bedroom! Overall, good and entertaining story with enemies to lovers, paranormal-ish things, a hunky archaeologist, and a whole lot of mystery.
