New Kid was the first graphic novel to be awarded the Newbery Medal, and it definitely deserved it.
When my professor tasked us with reading a Newbery winner from the last 5 years, New Kid was not my first choice, but of my top two, it was the first one I could get my hands on. (I almost immediately got my hands on my actual top choice, The Last Cuentista, as well, so you’ll see a review for that one next week.) While it’s not the one I immediately thought to read, I am glad that I read it because this was a fantastic graphic novel.
