Was let down by this book. The characters just didn't engage me in the way they needed to for this story to work for me and the historical Essex setting didn't draw me in, neither did the 'mystery' of the Essex serpent, the story needed more moments of unease to really sell me on it. I kept mentally comparing it to Diane Satterfield's Once Upon a River which was executed much more to my taste. I think some of the ideas about superstition and Christianity working as opposing as forces of faith was interesting especially contrasted with the press of science
