Poster Girl by Veronica Roth

3.0

A rather unlikeable narrator and an uninspiring romance meant I wasn't as invested in this book as I would have liked, however the mystery of how everything would tie up in the end kept my attention, and the fairly stark and barebone writing style held a rapid pace in a depressingly bleak dystopian world gone to shit.

I am always fascinated by the ideas Roth presents in her blurbs - for Chosen Ones it was "what do the saviours of the world do after the world is saved", and for this book it's a question of "what does the ubiquitous face of the oppressive regime do once the regime is inevitably overthrown". I'm not sure this theme was explored to the extent that the blurb implied it would be, but it's still an intriguing prospect to chew on, outside of the limitations of the world building chosen to structure this particular book.
