Beneath a Scarlet Sky by Mark T. Sullivan
3.0
+1 ⭐ for shedding light on what I assume is a widely unknown chapter of Italy's involvement in WWII, the Catholics role in aiding the escapement of Jews, and the secrecy the Italians held all these years in regards to the loss and trauma they endured.
+1 ⭐ for general engagement and entertainment - the novel's flaws didn't make me quit.
+1 ⭐ for the author's earnest attempt to accurately portray the true life story of Pino Lella ... I think...
-1 ⭐ for the author's earnest attempt to accurately portray the true life story of Pino Lella ... with a CRAP LOAD of fiction sandwiched in between. I know the author disclosed at the beginning that this book is a piece of fiction BASED on the true life of Lella buuuuuuut... that just watered the whole thing down for me and quite honestly, had me rolling my eyes during MANY scenes in which the events of Lella's life are so PUFFED up the story ends up landing flat and borderline ridiculous. I blame this unfortunate result on ONE thing...
-1 ⭐ for poor writing.
