Ponniyin Selvan - The Pinnacle of Sacrifice, Vol. 2 by Kalki
5.0
"Yama will come nowhere near me until I achieve my purpose, for I am the immortal who has drunk nectar."
"People who are going to be born a thousand years hence in this brave country should be astounded by the work we do now."
I can only imagine how beautiful it would have been to read this book in Tamil. The last part of the final volume to this extremely large series was filled with my twist and turns. We uncover all of the secrets and finally get to coronation (which even then had a plot twist of its own). Considering how this was a historical fiction, Kalki never ceases to amaze us with plot twists when we least expect it. He was able to bring out the large amount of characters in the book wonderfully. Everyone in the book has a shade of gray to them. We get to sympathise with Nandini and see another side of her.
Kandamaran likewise, went to extremes of hatred and back to being humble and wise. Finally, Vandiyathevan was portrayed as a youngster who is free-spirited and little bit of flirt. But, at the ending he is completely changed. We see him mature and grow wiser from all of his experiences. Wonderfully written.
