First Lie Wins by Ashley Elston

fast-paced

5.0

Evie Porter has everything a nice, Southern girl would want in life. The catch? Evie Porter doesn't exist. Her mysterious boss Mr Smith provides the identity and a location, and then she must learn everything there is to know about that area and the people in it. Then she receives her mark: Ryan Summer. Evie doesn't know the identity of Mr Smith but she does know that this job will be different. Evie can't afford to make any mistakes, especially after what happened last time. She's worked all of her life to keep her real identity clean, but her identity just walked into town, leaving Evie no choice but to stay one step ahead of her past while ensuring she has a future to look forward to.

FIRST LIE WINS is an incredibly crafty and well-written story, leveraging itself into one of the first of many beloved five star reads for me in 2024.

This is my first experience with Ashley Elston's writing but it won't be the last; her writing is smart with careful attention to detail, and skillfully put together. The plot is fast-paced and bingeable - I couldn't get enough of this story. The audiobook narration was very well-done, easily bringing the story to life.

I was quickly blown away by the intricate and alternating timelines, the sly main character, and the twists that I kept thinking I had figured out but really had no clue. A top read for this year for sure!
