The Tropic Of Serpents by Marie Brennan
3.0
Not as good as the first novel in the series. That one did a good job of balancing the various aspects of the story. The main character's struggles to find a way to achieve her dreams while being restricted by the society she was born into. Her adventures while in the field studying dragons. And details on the actual studying of dragons in the setting.
This time around, the story is more heavily focused on the first two parts. For a story about an expedition to study a different breed of dragon, there's not a whole lot of dragon study that goes on. Or rather, we're not told much about it. The author comes up with an acceptable in story reason for why some of that information is not shared with the reader. But it is a little annoying to be told that we're not worthy hear the bits that we were expecting to get to read.
What's here is good. But it's not great when the dragon book, with a dragon on the cover, can be criticized for needing more dragons.
