Normal People by Sally Rooney

4.0

Connell and Marianne may live in the same town and go to the same school, but they live very different lives. It's why Connell keeps Marianne a secret. When they both end up at Trinity College, they reconnect, and the consequences of the past meet up with their current dilemmas to form a love story that is anything but perfect.

I picked this up as it is very much loved by a friend who lives in Ireland. I wanted to read it because she said that it felt very familiar to her. I love when stories are based on places where the author can really write about locations, slang, mannerisms, and cultures that are there.

This love story is not one of instant perfection. Connell and Marianne are two imperfect people who happen to love each other. The book takes us through the journey of their relationship, from their teen years to their college years. It contains a rollercoaster of emotions as we watch the two main characters try and navigate growing up, friendships, identity, and of course, love. I love the realism as I often find romance in books to be too perfect. This felt more like a real relationship.

I did find it a bit slow and not something I felt hooked on. Despite all the things I did like, I just didn't love it. I understand why others do and I did really enjoy it, I just wouldn't consider it a new favorite. I think that there's a select group of people that will absolutely adore this book.
