Last Argument of Kings by Joe Abercrombie
5.0
I was going to rate this one 4 stars as well, but the last quarter or so was highly amusing and enjoyable. It seems it was very polarizing and I understand why. Even so, the 5 stars is 4.5 stars rounded up and barely makes it to that.
It's unfortunate when people are committed to how they want a story to go based on a mistaken belief of what has happened and then the plot irreconcilably diverges from how they though it would go resulting in lowly rated reviews. Sometimes life just doesn't work out, isn't fair, and doesn't give anyone what they "deserve".
Is that something people want to read? Depends on why they are reading. If it's purely for uplifting escapism, then they picked the wrong series from the beginning. I don't think the ending was a bait and switch. It was foreshadowed often and many clues were given. I thought a bit more could been resolved, but it was fine. I can only accept "life's not so easily resolved" so much.
If I had previously read books that were similar to what I read here, then I would have certainly rated it 4 stars instead. I think people can change, but circumstances, both environmental and hereditary, can make that rather difficult. By the end I found literally almost every character, whether major or minor, unlikable and yet it still worked out well.
