The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss

5.0

With the recent uptake in Pottermania given the release of The Cursed Child, the quickest way I can describe this book is 'What if, Lord Voldermort decided he wanted to be a Hero, and then hit a mid-life crisis?'

The book is about Kvothe a gifted young man who suffered violently at the hands of forces that were beyond his comprehension, and thus, he made it his life's work to try and not only understand but also better them, irrespective of the obstacles he faced. The narrative of the book is mostly first person, as the book is mostly Kvothe dictating his life story to a Chronicler but the brief interludes where the narrative shifts from first person to third is handled masterfully. The story in itself is rather dark and gritty with a few splashes of humor and genuine romance thrown in. I highly recommend this book to readers who would like to graduate from reading the traditional 'the good guys win at the end' stories to something more grounded in reality and at the same time retaining it's fantastical nature.
