NOS4A2 by Joe Hill

4.0

As other reviewers have said, I have to give an extra star for Kate Mulgrew's absolutely phenomenal vocal work on the audiobook. Full of lyrical prose, this book was extremely memorable, if disturbing, and hard to put down. The impact of Hill's imagery is even more potent considering the contrast between evocative descriptions of, say, a library (“She breathed deeply of the scent of decaying fiction, disintegrating history, and forgotten verse, and she observed for the first time that a room full of books smelled like dessert: a sweet snack made of figs, vanilla, glue, and cleverness”) and the graphic luridness of horror, violence, and gore. I would have liked to get to know Vic better - her overarching quality is that of toughness and strength but much of her character development, especially adolescence, is skipped over.
