Camp Damascus by Chuck Tingle

I picked this books for its themes, and its themes were what kept me reading. I don't care about the horror genre, here represented by body horror and demonic creatures; what made this book really terrifying for me was its connection to reality. Conversion camps, the way some people would rather see their kids utterly destroyed than let them love whomever they want, and religious cults in contemporary America ("we are in the business of saving lives" was the most disgusting line in the book, I really don't care about worms or mayflies).
That being said, I didn't care much for the execution. It read like a YA book, too much on the nose, and frankly I was bored half the time. The ending was rushed, stopping almost mid-scene. I guess I wanted a little bit more substance.
