This is an oddly tragic tale that feels longer than you would expect from a story only a few hours/a couple 100 pages long but it’s also filled with a whimsical brightness that makes it easy to understand why this is considered a staple children’s story to so many. James is a sweet child and his large big companions are so interesting to think of. I love how stories like this let you feel like imagination really can run wild without having to hold onto realistic constraints or expectations at all. In a children’s story, you don’t have to justify magic - it just is and you move along.
