I wanted to absolutely adore this book. It seemingly had everything I could ask for. I think that the story, the plot, is quite wonderful. It's the characters I took issue with, and by that I mean the way they are written.
There is something missing in the characterization here. While we hear a lot about how they think and feel, none of it feels real. The characters all feel hollow, like they are puppets playing out a story they have no emotional connection to. Like there is no soul to any of them. As a reader that is very character-focused, this meant I wasn't able to connect at all.

Moderate: Fire/Fire injury
Minor: Body shaming, Death of parent, and Injury/Injury detail
