The Secret of Ella and Micha by Jessica Sorensen

I liked this book, it was okay. Maybe if I hadn't read already a lot of similar books I would have enjoyed it more. So it's not really this book's fault or even the author's, I guess it was just bad timing.

One of the big problems I see with this book is the storyline. I don't think it's solid enough, or even original. It's not something I haven't read before, it's not something nobody has written before. So the lack of originality is one of the main reasons I'm giving this a low rating.

I'm spanish, and I'm starting to think every father in America abandons his sons, except for the ones who stick around but have a problem with alcohol. Then we have all those american mothers who die when their child is a kid, or kill themselves, or do drugs.

Does every girl in the USA have a secret past? Maybe every teenager is dealing with irresponsible parents.

What I'm trying to say is that I would like to read a story with characters who actually have a normal life and family. Maybe a regular guy with insecurities, or a smart guy who likes comics and meets a girl in college under normal circumstances and they fall in love in a sweet story with enough drama or interesting plot. I believe there are tons of different situations to create something amazing without always the same bad boy and womanizer full of tattoos and commitment problems and the typical girl with insecurities who is afraid to fall in love with him because "it's not the right thing".

I mean, there's nothing wrong with any of the above, I'm just saying that if it's told the right way, any story can be amazing, no matter how many times we've seen those same scenarios before.

I'm not sure if it was the writting, but in this case I couldn't feel the characters at all. I don't think they are believable or developed enough. I couldn't even feel bad for Ella. Yeah, she had problems, but she goes away only to come back 8 months later and be the same girl than before but now she makes out with her best friend. I don't know, but the story seems weak to me.

Micha is sweet enough, but they are still things about him that I don't understand. Like missing pieces. I would have liked to see more of him, of his past and moments with Ella from their childhood. I don't really understand their flirting and the way they get together, honestly.

My favorite part was probably Ethan. He is a great secondary character and I actually liked him more than Ella.

Other than that, I'm not even sure about the second book. I don't know if I'll read it.
