This whole book is dark and a bit sinister. The main characters were flawed, dislikable, and not beautiful and I loved them for it. Luzia wanted an okay life instead of the drudgery she was being forced to endure. She didn’t want much until she saw what she could get. Then she wants more and more and more until it had destroyed everything. The same can be said for Valentina. The same can be said for Hualit. The same for Santángel and Victor and Fortún. They all wanted and wanted until everything fell apart. I really thought that there would be no HEA in this book but there is, although strained. It’s a “we are happy with what we were able to obtain in the end ever after.”
This is my first Bardugo book and I really enjoyed it.
