Finishing this book late last night had me in tears! My mind was blown and I couldn't believe it.
The Between follows Hilton James who when he was a kid he almost drowned but his grandmother (Nana) saved him. However in saving him she got swept away by the current and died. Hilton has since been plagued with nightmares. These nightmares follow him and heighten when his wife, Dede newly appointed Judge in Dade County Florida - the first African- American to be elected the position, begins receiving vile racist hate mail. As Hilton's nightmares come back they come back more vividly and begin to make him question what is reality and what is a dream.

This book had me stressed out on the edge of my seat. It had me scared and anxious to read the hate mail that Dede was receiving and how the threats were getting close and closer to their home and their children. This book was so well written! I love the way Tananarive Due not only writes characters but how the pace of the story moves along. I felt so attached and so worried for certian characters and was surprised as how close I felt to them so early on in the book. I had mentioned to Kim that in reading one particular scene that was frightening (a very racist man saying racist things to the main character) my mind kept picturing my own Dad in that moment. That struck a nerve and I had to put the book down for a moment. The intensity in the scenes Due writes never fails to put me on an emotional journey. She is one of my favorite authors.
