Trumpet by Jackie Kay

5.0

TRUMPET is the story of Joss Moody, a Scottish jazz musician who is living in London. After his death, the coroner learns that Joss was ASAF and so decides to record this on his death certificate. This single decision, alongside the funeral director’s spur of the moment choice to tell Joss’s son, results in shockwaves which reverberate across the community.

Trumpet is, at its heart, a love story. It’s a story of intimate and unconditional love, the secrets we keep and the performance of gender. Jackie Kay has an incredibly beautiful writing style and I adored the narration by Cathleen McCarron, so reading this book on audio and ebook was a great combination.

Here’s one of my favourite quotes, from the moments before Joss’s death:
“He told me to remember the bandages, to remember and put the bandages back on. So I unbuttoned the pyjama jacket, managed to pull it off. It was hard work. I wrapped the bandages around his chest for the last time. The bandages that were part of our life together.”

I’d highly recommend this one!
