Nah Jemisin has done it again for me, she just knows how to write a story, and this time Lovecraftian themed based on our world (w/ reminders of who Lovecraft was as a person and pos). She writes the politics and culture of New York in such a reflective and respectful way to its modern life and history that does it justice and creates a magical story. Has it influenced which parts of the city I love more (or hate - looking at you Staten Island)? Most definitely, and if you're looking for a fantasy book that makes you feel proud of where you're from and who you are, I highly recommend this book to you. One of the few times a book has made me feel closer to my American identity than ever before, even though I'm not from New York myself. Jemisin does the city justice through this book, and that's all anyone can ask for.
