This book is about grief and how far we go to avoid it. It is also a social critique of capitalism and our obsession with appearances.

I wanted to hate the main character (narrator) but I couldn’t. I totally understood her. I started hating the character of Reva and then I pitied her, which is worse. The last chapter left me on loading because I knew it was going to happened as soon as Reva mentioned her new job, but still hurt. I find it hypocritical that people criticized the main character’s decisions and attitudes towards her best friend, when (when you think about it) we have all done it. We have ALL been a-holes, we all have a friend that we can’t stand but somehow love, we all judge other people all the time.

The doctor was hilarious, but she had good points in her delusion. Likewise, many of the topics and language shown is exactly how people were in that time. 2000 and 2001 were heavy transitional years in the US. So, having this story during those two years speaks true to how we were back then.

Overall, I liked this book. I loved the writing, the story and Moshfegh just became one of my favorite authors. I just wished she wouldn't circle around many of the character's flaws so much just to get to the point.
