All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque
5.0
This book does not glorify war nor it's achievements. It tells a story about a generation of young men, fighting in a cold, distant front. The author explains how this generation is doomed, as many of these men were quickly taken from their home to the war. They did not know the "rules" of the War, nor how to survive. Many of them could be still called "kids". They have no future upon themselves, the older generation will return home to their families and jobs, the upcoming generation will not acknowledge them. All these young men have are only memories of the front, dying friends and never ending loneliness.
To survive the war, they had to become emotionless animals, thus while seeing the world through Paul's perspective, this book broke me. They had no choice and they had no salvation.
