The Future by Naomi Alderman

5.0

This is my first book by Naomi Alderman, and it was fascinating! I don't read a lot of sci-fi or dystopian lit and found The Future incredibly immersive. We get such a vivid picture of each character and the near future and societal collapse.

Though the book description sounds pretty action-packed, the story is much more character-driven. Alderman does such a fantastic job with world building and envisioning the future we're currently headed for. The story is told in alternating perspectives and media excerpts. The background of each person was so well-written.

There is a heavy philosophical bent, and the story is so thought-provoking. It made me ponder our society and the responsibility tech companies specifically have to humanity. Why do we allow just a few individuals to exert so much control of what happens to our world and society? How has unfettered capitalism doomed us and pitted us against each other in the quest for more money?

What choices would we make if we knew the end of the world was imminent? How can we prepare? What makes a strong and moral society? What makes life worth living, and how do we improve things?

Overall, it is an intriguing look into our possible future.

Thank you, Simon and Schuster and NetGalley, for providing this ARC. All thoughts are my own.
