My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry by Fredrik Backman

5.0

This book is originally written in Swedish and I just want to say a big thank you to the translator who has done a marvelous job, Henning Kosh. I believe he, also, translated Beartown by the same author (if I'm not mistaken).

Beartown was a 2018 favorite of mine and so reading this book I went with high expectation. And it did not disappoint.

I have lost count of how many books I've already started reading and failed to continue this year succumbing to my one and only nemesis, YouTube. Oh boy! I am filled with shame and disgust every time my finger hovers above your little icon and ultimately giving in. It's a testament to your magnetic power that only a rare occurrence or 'once in a blue moon' happenstance that such power yields defeat.

And behold!

My Grandmother Asked Me To Tell You She's Sorry came. (Or is found)
(The Book God is generous this time!)

I actual cried tears, real ones and ones that hurt. And laughed, real loud.

Elsa's relationship with her grandmother is heartwarming and one we can relate to, one way or the other. And certainly, I did.

No character in this book is one dimensional, rather one that can stand on its own and still deliver a great story.

The backstories were all written with conviction that if we consider emotion as a sort of liquid then this book needs more than just a glass.

It was realistic, but never boring.

It was emotional, but never sappy.

It was a great read. And I thank Book God for giving me the strength to hit home button and exit YouTube. I wouldn't have read this in a span of one day.

P.s if you are a fan of Harry Potter then one must read this! ;)
