A Novel Love Story by Ashley Poston

5.0

Another fabulous read. Magic realism is becoming my favourite genre for sure.

A book about love and loss and finding yourself again.
Gosh it had me fully in my feels.

I loved how it was both an homage to and a satire of a small town romance book (and/or Hallmark film).

It was really fun to read about Eloraton and the townsfolk, the book club members, the friendships, and small town life, and on top of that fab to get a slightly eerie feeling with the almost Gothic horror / Victorian mystery vibes.
Eileen/Elsy could be a bit dense at times, but Anders and Butterscotch saved the day. Anders also had me laughing at his fab one-liners and kicking my feet at the romantic moments.

Did I catch a tongue-in-cheek slagging off of “The Dead Romantics” in one of the final chapters?

Going in, I thought for sure 5 stars. After 100-150 pages I really was not sure (too much time spent on flashbacks and Liam), but things picked up speed, the story moved nicely along, all threads were grabbed, and then neatly tied into a bow.

And it was enough.

4.75 stars rounded up.
