I wouldn’t say this story is bad but it’s at a disadvantage because it has to create the emotion connection that already exists in the other “portal episodes” because this is a completely new character. We’re being placed directly in the story of this character but haven’t seen her in our world yet - haven’t been witness to her strangeness before seeing what made her strange. Along with being a stranger, the world she inhabits just isn’t quite as interesting as the ones we’ve seen so far. It’s mostly an easy, pastoral landscape and there really isn’t very much to do or see along the way so it felt like my interest would wane quickly. The ending makes up a lot of ground and you do love Reagan by the end of the book but it’s not the almost cinematic adventure we see from The Moors or the Goblin Market
