The Grand Sophy by Georgette Heyer
medium-paced
- Plot- or character-driven? Plot
3.75
Meh. A fun British farce but hardly a romance to shout home about. None of the romances were truly built up to apart for Charlbury’s, and Sophy’s came so out of nowhere I felt we needed another 7 chapters. Like did she even love him? It only felt built up to because it was the unsaid obvious ending. Their growing interest in eachother wasn’t written into the book at all.
Some sections were hilarious and I’ll happily credit Heyer for her skill at creating great moments of absolute chaos.
I don’t like when authors force us to dislike certain characters by giving them no redeeming features and really felt for Miss Wraxton as a result
The antisemitism was uncalled for and just left a bad taste in my mouth.
I also didn’t appreciate how Sophy never put a foot wrong - it was like Emma only she had no character development arc or sweeping love declaration.
Also all the horse talk really confused me so half the book made no sense 😂
